For nearly 25 years, Art City has been an integral part of the St. James Town community, operating from Medallion’s 545 Sherbourne building and enriching the lives of countless children and families through the power of art. Art City is a registered Canadian charity, established by a group of local artists and educators who sought to create more resources for children in St. James Town. Since 2000, Art City has made arts education accessible by providing free arts programming and day camps for children and youth.
Medallion has always been deeply committed to supporting the arts and fostering a strong, connected community. It was important to partner with Art City for The Bourne's hoarding artwork as it serves as a powerful visual representation of Art City’s impact on St. James Town. This large-scale, vibrant installation will feature artwork created by local youth enrolled in Art City's program.
To bring this vision to life, Art City is partnering with Toronto-based abstract painter Sarah Klawiter, who will lead art workshops with Art City participants. Sarah is a Toronto-based abstract painter who graduated from OCAD University in 2019. Using a diversity of mediums, like acrylics layered with recycled materials, Sarah creates narrative “windows.” She aims to transform everyday scenes into layered stories with character-like forms.
The overall design will feature abstracted shapes that suggest iconic elements of Toronto's skyline, streets, parks, and waterfront, but with a modern, expressive twist. Rather than a literal representation of the city, the mural will evoke its spirit through dynamic shapes, textures, and movement. The black and white stripes incorporated into the artwork serve as a powerful visual metaphor for the constant movement and diversity of people in Toronto.
To further enhance the creative process, the children participating in the project will be encouraged to experiment with different mediums such as sand, fabric, and paper, adding depth, dimension, and a tactile element to the mural. This hands-on approach will make the mural more interactive and personal for the young artists involved, ensuring that their contributions are embedded into the heart of the final piece.
We hope you enjoy this vibrant art installation that celebrates the diversity of St. James Town!
St. James West Park has long been a cherished green space, offering a natural retreat amid the urban landscape. Now, with an exciting redesign coming soon, this beloved park is set to become a dynamic gathering place that enhances both its ecological and social value. The revitalized St. James West Park will feature a blend of lush greenery, engaging play areas, and welcoming spaces for relaxation and community connection.
The new St. James West Park will feature large, mature trees to provide shade and serenity, while understory planting to add layers of greenery, creating a more immersive natural environment. For families with young children, the new playground will be a highlight. The play area will encourage active exploration and social interaction. The integration of a small community garden will serve as a hub for community connection. The park will also offer a variety of seating options with a flexible open lawn space and plaza with bistro tables. Plus, a dedicated space for Indigenous public art will celebrate the rich history and contributions of Indigenous communities.
Whether you’re looking to relax with a good book, meet up with a friend, or simply take in the sights and sounds of the neighbourhood, St. James Park will be the destination to gather, play, relax and enjoy art and community.
Construction of the park is expected to begin Spring 2025 with completion for Fall 2026.
